On January 1, 2023, Evaluation and Management (E/M) guidelines for the emergency department (ED) were updated for the first time in over 25 years. This update, “E/M 2023,” includes a number of changes to coding and documentation guidelines with the goal of reducing the administrative burden placed on healthcare providers. Although not an intended consequence, E/M 2023 guideline changes also have an impact on reimbursement in the ED, a key area of concern as operating margins remain razor-thin. 

To help provider organizations better understand the impact of E/M 2023 documentation guidelines on reimbursement, Nym assessed the changes to the average reimbursement per patient encounter in the ED following implementation of the E/M 2023 guidelines.
